Philip Pullman has said that Spectres were his way of talking about mental states such as depression and self-hatred.John Parry used his skills as a shaman to control one and send it onto a zeppelin to attack the pilot, causing the zeppelin to crash. The novel continues the adventures of Lyra Belacqua (now known as Lyra Silvertongue) recounted in the first novel, Northern Lights, as she investigates the mysterious phenomenon of Dust. The Subtle Knife continues directly where Northern Lights/Golden Compass left off: a common trait in trilogies, and one I dont like.

Spectres fed on Dust by attacking post-pubescent humans and eating their soul, leaving them as a mindless shell. They aren't currently certain if the second will be filmed or not but due to world-wide. To adults, they appeared as shimmers in their air which moved with malevolence. The second would be called The Subtle Knife after the book the next book in the series by Phillip Pullman. Spectres were invisible to prepubescent children.
